Jack Chanin was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on October 24, l930. His parents, George and Hilda were born in Riga, Latvia as were his three siblings.
In 1922 George left Latvia for the United States to make a better life for himself and his family. He left his wife, daughters, Bella and Edith and son Meyer behind and promised to send for them as soon as he saved enough money for their passage by ship.
Seven years later that day finally arrived. Hilda packed up her children, their few belongings and made the voyage to the United States. It was a difficult journey and the ship was crowded and dirty. Many of the passengers became ill and the stench of feces and vomit permeated the air. Hilda said when she saw the Statue of Liberty, first she cried and then she thanked God that they were finally in the “promised” land.
Jack was born barely a year after Hilda’s arrival and now their family was complete. Since he was so much younger than his siblings he was always considered the “baby” of the family. Bella, who was 10 years older than Jack, took on the role of mothering him.
Jack was always fascinated by photography and attended Metric High School where photography and printing courses were offered. He graduated in June of 1948. In 1950 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was assigned to the 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing and was trained as a Gun Camera Technician.
As the fighter planes returned from their mission Jack would unload and process the films which documented the war as it was unfolding. He was also assigned to document the day to day activities of his fellow airmen and to capture the war on “still photography”. In 1954 he was honorably discharged and returned home to Brooklyn.
In 1955 he applied for and got a job at a small advertising and photography company which was then called Plymouth Photographers. He was hired as a messenger boy, but through hard work and his desire to learn all he could, he advanced up the ranks, and he became a valuable “inside” man who could perform in any and all capacities. Jack now held the title of Production Manager, and the company continued to grow.
In 1966 Plymouth Photographers’ name was changed to Visual Promotions, Inc. and was now a major force in the printing and photography field, and one to be reckoned with. Soon thereafter they expanded their printing capacities and opened Kordet Color, Inc. a beautiful, modern printing plant. The facilities boasted the most modern, innovative printing presses and the company eventually had 3 shifts working 24 hours a day. In 1988 Jack decided to relocate to Las Vegas and said his fond farewell to VPI and his longtime co-workers and friends.
In August of 1988 Jack bought a tiny print shop on Valley View Blvd. He just loved getting up each morning and going to work. He often said that professionally he went backwards 20 years, but he wouldn’t have traded his newfound company for the world.
Greta, his younger daughter started working with him and he trained her just as he had been trained. She started as a “runner” and learned to do developing, plating, etc. in her spare time when there was nothing to deliver. Jack made sure that she did not receive any special treatment and if she wanted to work at Valley Press she would move up through the ranks just as he had. Soon thereafter Jack realized that Greta was a great salesperson….she now knew each and every aspect of the business and could sell a job based on solid knowledge and could describe each and every step that was involved in producing a superior finished product for the customer’s specific job. It was then that this father-daughter team was actually born….and the rest is history!
On a more personal level, we will begin in 1962...
It was then that he met Elaine Althoff, a beautiful girl 13 years his junior. Friends and family were deeply concerned about the difference in age but both Jack and Elaine could not be swayed. They were deeply in love, and knew in their heart that nothing could prevent them from being together.
They were married on June 1, l963. Their first child, Nancy was born in 1964, the second was a son, Jerry born in 1967 and finally their third child, Greta in l968. The Chanins were a close knit and loving family, every birthday, anniversary and every major holiday was celebrated with their large extended family in attendance.
It all started when I was 8 years old...we lived on Long Island, New York, and my father Jack built a darkroom in the basement of our home where I grew up. I knew from that moment in the darkroom that photography or something along that line of creativity would be my destiny.
I used to visit Visual Promotions in Manhattan and Kordet Graphics in Oceanside, Long Island where my father worked. It was there that I first saw the most modern, up-to-date printing presses. They produced beautiful images faster than the eye could see…sheet after sheet. I asked my dad, “How are these machines able to do such an amazing thing and what are they called?” My dad said they were “high tech” printing presses and they are the wave of the future. Boy was he correct!
In 1988 my father retired from Visual Promotions and our family relocated to Las Vegas. In true character, my father decided to buy a small print shop on Valley View Blvd. He was now the proud owner of Valley Press Incorporated. Retirement was definitely not part of his agenda. When I showed an interest in working with him he insisted that I learn the business from the ground up.
As a result I learned each and every aspect of professional printing; 32 years later, I am still just as passionate as I was as a teenager learning the ropes from my father.
Jorge originated from Guatemala, then came to the United States in 1992 where he established residency in California. He used his knowledge and capabilities to enhance other printing companies with his expert printing skills.
He moved to Las Vegas in 1999 and started working at a local print shop for a few years. His final stop is VPILV as he runs multiple presses simultaneously. He is truly amazing! Call today!

“RUFF RUFF!!!! CALL MY PARENTS AT 702-871-0660”

It all started sometime in 2008… The recession was just kicking off and the economy was becoming a major challenge to us. Among the challenges of the economy hitting, our City was also hit with a challenge that not all companies go through like we did.
We had been helping out a print broker (a print broker is someone who farms out their work to other printers) that was having medical issues (he was going through chemo which consisted of a rigorous treatment) and couldn’t handle his work flow, duties and obligations to his clients any longer. We brought him aboard and made him a Valley Press employee while he was addressing these medical issues.
I had spent the last two years treating his clients as if they were my own, running around town doing deliveries, picking up artwork, i.e., just helping someone out who needs the help, putting aside the needs of Valley Press to build his clientele up… I was helping someone who desperately needed help.
In 2008, the person whom I’d been helping survive his cancer decided to start his print broker company up again, and in doing so he and two other Valley Press employees cleaned us out by taking files, artwork and everything else that was needed to start up his company again.
I must say that was the worst thing that anyone has ever done to me and also the best thing anyone has ever done for me. With your back to the wall, when you see no light at the end of the tunnel… your self-preservation kicks in. There was absolutely no way I was going to go out of business, a family business that had been in Las Vegas for 25 years.
So, with self-preservation driving me, I asked myself, “How can I market something that no one else in Las Vegas or the country gives out to potential clients?” It was out of this brainstorming that I arrived at “The Bowl”. It is a 12 inch vinyl record that we melt into the shape of a bowl. Since the Valley press Logo is round it was a no-brainer to take our logo and put it on top of the existing record label. We then fill it with Valley Press marketing material that states what Valley Press has to offer as well as the cutest little gifts ever.
Since we first started doing “The Bowl”, we have given out well over 200 bowls a week to potential clients. There is always someone calling me a genius because of the unique marketing value as well as saving of our planet by recycling used records. Due to my ingenuity, I have discovered a very unique approach to saving Valley Press!
If you’re interested in having your own Valley Press Bowl please email or contact us at the shop and we will be more than happy to give you one for free, all that we ask of you is simple… please keep Valley Press in mind the next time you need any printing, signs and marketing items.
It is an honor to write this tribute in memory of Rachel Souza —a friend, a co-worker, and an all around great person.
No matter the circumstance, she stood apart as a special person. I first met Rachel at VPILV. Her friendly personality was so engaging yet she was so productive throughout the day. It was clear to me that she would have an outstanding career as an executive assistant.
Rachel’s contributions to Valley Press were numerous and her work ethic was more than remarkable. Energy, commitment, and integrity are all words that begin to capture the essence of Rachel.
Rachel was a caring and beloved woman, a fantastic co-worker, and a loyal friend.
She will be missed by many, but never will be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Rachel was originally from Texas. She moved to Las Vegas in 1990 from San Francisco Bay area. She got a job with a local printing company and was with them for over 15 years. Greta’s father Jack always said, “If you want a good assistant, grab Rachel Souza from any print shop she is at when the time comes.”
Well the time came, and Rachel has been with VPILV for many years. She was an expert in promotional items such as pens, mugs, mouse pads, etc. Anything you need to market your company, she could find it for you at affordable prices.
